Fukushima: Look What We Have Done to Our Planet (Rense & Durnford)

Published on Oct 28, 2015

Former US Gov’t Official: “The elephant in the room is Fukushima radiation” when it comes to Pacific Ocean animal die-offs… Gov’t has totally failed to inform public about full extent of fallout… Media’s silence is deafening. LOOK at What We have Done to the PLANET!

• In the aftermath of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power meltdown… the international community has totally failed in keeping the public properly informed and protected from the fallout. Scientists and environmental officials continue to express concern, even now, at the unusual events and wonder about the causes.

At the same time, the media present the facts, but fail to make any connection whatsoever to the ongoing state of affairs stemming from the tragic 2011 events at Fukushima. Here are a few recent examples…

A September 2015 audio report from Robin Corcoran, biologist from the Kodiak Wildlife National Refuge, confirms local reports that “emaciated” bird carcasses are washing up on Kodiak Island shores…

The program concluded by stating that multiple species of birds have declined in number in other Alaska regions…

A few days before the Kodiak reports… Josh Saranpaa of the Wildlife Center of the North Coast was quoted as saying, “Every bird we’re seeing is starving to death.

It’s pretty bad.” Saranpaa added, “When you see so many starving, something is not quite right out there.”… Julia Reis of the Half Moon Bay Review writes with understatement, “There have been noticeable changes in the Pacific Ocean that have caused difficulties for marine life of late.” Gerry McChesney of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge says that the die-off has him all the more “baffled” because of the strip of cold water in his area full of food for these birds.

In my mind’s eye, I can see McChesney scratching his head as I read that he considers poisoning, starvation, and El Nino as possible causes for the die-off. The article ends with the following comment by McChesney, “We might have to see some other problem in the ocean before we understand what’s causing the die-off.”

On top of it all the EPA has now admitted that uranium and radium is leaking into the groundwater.

Thank you to Blitz just Blitz for the info link and comment She is on to something about the migration of radionuclides into the water intake systems. The “unspoken Word”, it seems in the report.

They only seem to mention the direction its flowing, but not the location of the fresh water intake. ( NW at 415 to 475 feet ASL ) Page 11 in the report, saying it will take 57 years to reach the Missouri river…. at 137 feet per year… I think someone else should check those figures, to be honest.

CANCER CLUSTERS AROUND ST. LOUIS, MO:
Coldwater Creek Facts http://www.coldwatercreekfacts.com/

Mallinckrodt Chemical Works began processing the original Belgian Congo Uranium (U235) in 1942 for the first atomic bomb at its downtown St. Louis location (SLDS). By the mid 1940’s, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works had run out of space and began to ship the radioactive waste offsite, to an underpopulated area, north of St. Louis. The offsite storage was located at the Hazelwood Interim Storage Site (HISS) on Latty Avenue and also at the St. Louis Airport Site (SLAPS). Radioactive materials were stored in bulk, on the ground, open to the elements, and unattended next to Coldwater Creek until the 1970’s. Coldwater Creek runs throughout North St. Louis County and is a tributary for the Missouri River.

Through wind, rain, flooding, and groundwater, Coldwater Creek was contaminated, providing radioactive material a mode of transportation. The area the radioactive material was stored on surrounding the creek consists of porous material and is riddled with underground interconnecting caves, rivers, springs and groundwater tables.

From the 1950’s to 1970’s there was a significant population boom in St. Louis County. With the population growth, there was a flurry of construction activity, building new subdivisions and supporting businesses. Construction grading disturbed the radioactive materials, effectively redistributing the contamination throughout all of North St. Louis County, much like spreading icing on a cake.

Our community has been chronically exposed to ionizing radiation for decades through inhalation and ingestion

Today, the government has acknowledged contamination occurred and is working to clean up the area through a program called FUSRAP (Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program).

St Louis Nuke Dump Fire No Liner on Flood Plain Cancer Cluster Map

Published on Oct 21, 2015

The majority of St. Louisans who get their water from the Missouri River have most likely never heard of the West Lake Landfill, but they should. Since 1973, 8,000 tons of nuclear waste has been decaying at this landfill with no protective liner to separate it from ground water. To understand the depths of concern, just look at the faces of those who wanted EPA officials to hear them.

“I am sicker than a dog,” said one resident who lives near the landfill. Karen Nickel, who battles lupus, believes she too is sick because of the nuclear waste dumped at the West Lake Landfill nearly 40 year ago. “West Lake especially is a ticking time bomb right now,” said Nickel.

The origins of the waste date back to the Manhattan Project and the creation of the first atomic weapon. Enormous amounts of uranium were purified at Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in downtown St. Louis.

The process generated piles of nuclear waste that the government sent to disposal sites near the airport. In the 70s, about 8,000 tons of uranium, thorium, and radium were dumped at West Lake.

“This stuff has been sitting unprotected, not covered, no liner, and no barrier,” said Nickel.

Report: Landfill fire moved beyond equipment meant to stop its advance toward nuclear waste… Essentially ‘fire line’ is breached — St. Louis Official: Something must be done, but there’s nothing we can do — Asst. Fire Chief: “Words can’t explain how important it is” to have a good plan.

CBS St. Louis, July 31, 2013: Bridgeton residents have been calling on state and federal agencies to put a stop to the underground fire at the Bridgeton Landfill but St. Louis County officials said Tuesday there is nothing they can do to mitigate the situation. “This is a state and federal issue. Now, we support that something needs to be done but again, it’s in St. Louis County, but it’s an EPA issue and it’s a state issue,” [County Executive Charlie Dooley] says. […] EPA officials claimed there was “adequate time” before the fire reached nuclear waste at the nearby West Lake Landfill.

Manhattan Project History in the St Louis and St Charles Area 1942 to Present Day

Published on Jan 21, 2014

A Photo Story of the Manhattan Project’s beginning in 1942 the St. Louis Area, starting with Mallinckrodt Chemical Works and the spreading out into the St. Louis North Couty Area and St. Charles County Area where it remains to this day. All but one site is under the FUSRAP Program; West Lake Landfill. This Site NEEDS to be under FUSRAP! West Lake Landfill is not and never has been a licensed Radioactive Waste Site. This site sits in an Urban Area, on a Flood Plain, in an Earthquake Zone, 1.5 miles from the Missouri River, 8 miles upstream from the North County Water Treatment plant and has be hit by 2 of 3 Tornado’s that have struck the North St. Louis County Region in the past 3 years.

In the 1940’s the Manhattan Project produced the first nuclear weapons, that were later to be dropped on Japan. Tons of nuclear waste from those experiments was buried in a creek near St. Louis.
